Lyrics, Stories and Songs

The bands lyricist, Vincent Morris, threads the concepts and ideas of various philosophy into the rustic and ancient voicing’s of Stumbling Home. It is these glimpses of specific locales and moments that become woven into songs that feel like the same back roads of the listener’s life.

The ancient echoes of the Chichewa translations sung by Kondwani Phwandaphwanda sound at once both exotic and familiar.  They conjure an unmistakable sense of place that is surprisingly closer than southern Africa.

Alan Rainey can always be counted on to provide the final word...

Blink
Life will pass you by in an instant
Before you know it - in the blink of an eye
And I, I want to make a difference
No turning away or closing my eyes

Love will pass you by in an instant
Before you know it - in the blink of an eye
A bowl fish spends his life swimming circles
Tell me are you happy with your life

What do you need for a memory?
What do you need for right now?
I have red the prophets of the ages
But tell me how to be here now

Right now…

Comes and Goes
Wise man say there's no way
To see the same river twice
Just like the tide flows down the shore
For another stranger's eyes
It comes and goes
Comes and goes
Flowing like a river
Going home
Does anyone here – hear the sound
Can you tell me what we've found?
The world spins round – round and round
No one knows what's up or down
It comes and goes
Comes and goes
Flowing like a river
Going home

Could Have Been

So autumn leaves got you thinking
That this time it won’t work
And autumn leaves got you sinking
And this time it’s going to hurt
Oh and you
You could have been
Oh and you
You let me in
I sat right down at your table

The autumn leaves turn from red now
I guess nothing last too long
I hear the children start to sing now
I guess some things will carry on
Oh and you
You could have been
Oh and you
You let me in
I sat right down at your table

How our bodies would have glistened
In the gold of morning sun
How the crowds would have listened
To all the songs you sung
Oh and you
You could have been
Oh and you
You let me in
I sat right down at your table
I sat right down at your table
I sat right down at your table
I sat right down at your table

Crush
I’ve been accused
Tried and abused
And I just don’t know what to do
With just a word this world
Will crush you

I walked for miles
My feet are hurting
Halfway around the world
And I’m still searching
Never found what I was

So if you see her
Will you tell her hi
And that I never meant to be
So unkind
With just a word this world
Will crush you

Flimsy

I wonder if the clouds are gone to stay
I wonder where they blow when they blow away
I wonder how they know to follow long
I wonder if they’ll drop the bomb before long

But there is no doubt in my Mind
That one day there will be a bright light
Cut the blue sky in half
Bring the children back
Bring the children back

The dreamer will awaken
The dream will still persist
The flimsy screen of the mind
Flattered by a kiss
So go ahead taste the apple
Go ahead taste my sin
Temptation’s beckoning
G-d don’t let it win
G-d don’t let it win

Lady in the Distance Screaming

Four days into the journey
I came upon the jury
Guilty was their verdict
Cast down into the dirt

Lady in the Distance Screaming

Well yes I’ve taste your wine
Long through the night
Barefoot in your garden
Cast out of Eden’s light

Lady in the Distance Screaming

The canvas is stretched
The brush is dripping wet
The canvas is stretched
Go ahead and take what’s left

Lady in the Distance Screaming

Little Rock

Headed down 81
It turned into 40 and the Southwestern sun
Drive on through Cumberland
The spirits reaching out to me once again
I made Memphis by midnight
The city lights just shining on the riverside
I’m no stranger still
To that ole muddy water and that Mississippi wheel
Drove on through south land
The cotton fields surrounded me once again

With a little rock and a little roll
I’m coming home

Brother sitting in the easy chair
He got a 38 special that he’s waving in the air
Methadone in the kitchen drawer
Momma says it’s getting better than before

With a little rock and a little roll
I’m coming home

And Daddy died 3 years ago
He left a broken hearted women and broken hearted home

With a little rock and a little roll
I’m coming home

Name

You don’t know the day until you wake up
You don’t know your strength until you stand up
You don’t know your name until you shout it out
Stand up tall and fall back down

It’s a losing proposition that you’ve been given
Even though you had all the breaks
Though you should be grateful you’re mis-given
You should not take and take and take

You don’t know your name until you shout it
You don’t know what you got until they take it
And all you dreamed about is getting crowded
With all the same old days

Wake up, get dressed, feed the baby
Rush down the road to your death
Maybe save a life or be taken for granted
Go home at night and smell baby’s breath

            And it’s a sacred common
The day to day that we live

            And it’s a sacred communion
When I lie with you in bed

You don’t know your name until you shout it
So shout it aloud today
